According to the statistics of the Iran’s Automobile Importers Association (IAIA), 26 thousand and 608 passenger cars were imported into the Iran during the past four months, which represents an increase of 43% compared to the same period last year. Accordingly, the value of imported was $ 752 million cars during this period, which is indicative of a 53% increase in the import value of the car during this period. Farhad Etechamzad, chairman of IAIA in a conversation with the World Economy, said that the dollar’s value had the highest growth rate in April, despite the fact that the largest number of car imports into the country took place in April and June. He also insisted that car imports fell 11 percent in July this year, compared to the same period last year. He said that in July this year, 4,958 vehicles were imported into the country, and decreasing in imports in July was due to the expiration of the six-month validity of various registrations. Ehtashamzad said that more than 90 percent of vehicles arrived through third countries, according to statistics for the past four months; "In other words, cars were not transported from the country of origin to Iran, and this indicates the import of these vehicles has been performed by sundries companies. Ehteshamzad, emphasizing that it was supposed to prevent the exit of the currency by executing the circular of ceasing the automobile registration but this did not happen; he said in June of this year, 10,000 vehicles arrived in the country, which caused a lot of foreign currency withdrawals. He explained the reasons for increased car imports by restrictions imposed by the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade, adding that the hasty policies of the Ministry of Industry have caused tensions on the market. He added that ceasing the automobile registration for sundries importers in January last year and for representative companies in the current situation has raised the price of imported cars prices. In fact, the cost of recent decisions is paid by car customers, because any ban or restriction on the market causes a rise in prices of imported cars. Referring to the fact that these decisions also lead to illegal practices, he said: "Due to recent policies, we are facing with new routes to circumvent the customs laws." He said the car imports will fall in the coming months; but due to the market conditions, we will definitely rise in price.
